Trade and climate in focus when the National Board of Trade participates in Geneva Trade Week

Is it possible to design a border carbon adjustment mechanism that is in compliance with WTO rules? How can trade in climate-relevant goods be facilitated? This will be discussed by the National Board of Trade Sweden in a seminar at Geneva Trade Week on 28 September.

– We have investigated how trade policy could contribute more to climate work. For example, several countries still have high tariffs on goods linked to cleaner road transport, says Emilie Eriksson, who will present two of the Swedish government agency National Board of Trade´s new reports in this field.

– We have also shown that it is possible to design a border carbon adjustment mechanism that is compatible with WTO rules. Such a mechanism would mean that importers have to pay a fee or buy emission allowances that corresponds to the emissions the imported goods have caused in production.

The seminar "Trade Policy and Climate - Which Instruments Have the Greatest Potential for the WTO to 'Build Back Better'?" is free of charge and open for everyone to sign up for. Sweden´s foreign trade minister Anna Hallberg is key-note speaker.
