Integrated trade with the rest of the world is the most effective way to secure the EU's supply of goods. It gives companies maximum flexibility to adapt to disruptions during a crisis, the National Board of Trade Sweden concludes in a new report.

The report is part of the National Board of Trade’s efforts to provide a fact-based input to the forthcoming EU trade policy review.

The effects of the corona crisis on supply chains in various sectors are discussed in the report.

– We recommend that the EU do not reintroduce trade barriers that were removed during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic – such as removed import barriers, simplified trade procedures and routines for smooth goods transport across borders, says Per Altenberg, the author of the report.

– In the future, the EU should also avoid using export restrictions in response to a crisis, as they have proved ineffective both during previous crises and during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
