In a new analysis, the National Board of Trade Sweden evaluates the effects of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) between the EU and Ukraine, showing that the agreement has resulted in their trade doubling.
– The study shows that the EU–Ukraine DCFTA has more than doubled trade between the EU and Ukraine. Compared to studies on the effects of other free trade agreements, this is a very strong effect, says strategic adviser Per Altenberg of the National Board of Trade Sweden.
The eastern enlargement of the EU in 2004 had strong effects on trade and prosperity in the affected countries. We can therefore expect that Ukraine will also see continued positive trade effects from EU membership.
– Since the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Ukraine already includes certain elements that involve aligning Ukraine's legislation with the EU's common regulatory framework, it is possible that some of the expected effects have already occurred," says Per Altenberg.
